Keeping Cool During the Summer

The weather around the country and beyond has been strange over the last year. Crazy storms, flooding rains last spring/summer, warmer than usual winter, and now unbelievable heat and fires in many regions. It has been very warm here, but for the most part it has not been too humid (YET). With fans and AC units, we can keep the house where we are much more comfortable than being outside.

When the temperatures are so warm, I wish we had a pool. We have a little kiddie pool I can toss it in the backyard for the kids to cool off for a bit.

Little Swimming Pool

The reality is that the kids are getting too big for this and the adults in the family can not really use it for more than dipping feet in. I miss my Nana and Papa’s pool where the entire family could splash, play, and laugh together more. It was also a place where we could learn to swim and practice.

Since we have no family pools to go to now, we have to look for alternatives. Thank goodness parks in the area have put a lot of spray grounds in. We have tried a few of them and definitely have a favorite now. Just the other day, TechyDad came home from work and went to cool off for about an hour before dinner with the boys. Here they are in “water jail” while enjoying the time there.

Park Spray Area

So my question to you this week is inspired by the photo above:

Do your kids like going to a spray ground or do they prefer pools? If you have any other suggestions on staying cool with the kids outside, I would love to hear them.

Favorite Summer Ice Cream

Yes, I am one of those people that will sit under a blanket or two in the winter eating some ice cream. Of course, in the summer ice cream is a splurge and fantastic treat on a warm day. Most of the places around here have soft serve in the summer months, but also hard ice cream.

For me, the choice is a no brainer. There is nothing like soft serve vanilla and chocolate twist ice cream with rainbow sprinkles in a cone. This takes me back to my childhood when my parents would take me to the local Carvel store. On our anniversary, I told TechyDad that I wanted to get ice cream for lunch. It was late, warm, and nobody felt like eating anything extreme. We went to a local place and my lunch is seen below.

Favorite Ice Cream Types

So my question to you this week is inspired by the photo above:

What type of ice cream is your favorite in the summer? Do you prefer soft serve or hard ice cream? Be sure to let me know if there is a certain flavor that you prefer (there are so many these days) and splurge and let me know sprinkle or dip preference as well.

On the Wall at the GYN

When I head to the doctor’s office, I rarely pay attention to the art on the wall. Most of the time, I am wrangling children, reading a book (if lucky enough to be alone), or catching up on e-mail (hello smart phone). There could be some amazing art on the walls, but I’m sorry to admit they are usually wasting their money trying to impress me with it.

All of this may have changed the other day. I had my annual gynecologist appointment. After I put on my magical paper gown, flicked the ready switch, covered my legs over, I sat with nothing to do but wait. Everything else was on the chair with my clothing. Suddenly, I looked up on the wall to this:

Waiting room art

The next thing I knew, I was laughing. It was like I was a middle school student in a health class. I knew that I had to pull myself together before my exam. I also knew that I HAD to take a photo there was a blog post here.

Did you notice what made me laugh? If not, take a close look at the artists name. I am not making fun of it, just think it’s hilarious since I was sitting with stirrups starring me down in a paper gown. It made me wonder if they had done it on purpose. Perhaps to see if patients were paying attention and to provide a little comic relief since so many people get anxious while waiting within this type of medical practice. I think I like this more than the anatomy posters or ads for different medications. It made me think and laugh at the same time.

So my question to you this week:

Do you look on the walls while waiting for your doctor? I would love to know if you have ever noticed anything like this. It really makes me wonder if others may be doing similar hidden funnies for patients to find.

2000 Post Blogging Milestone

Several weeks ago, TechyDad noticed on my WordPress admin page that I was closing in on post number 2000. He actually noted that it would fall on a Friday, so I knew it would show up for an Aloha Friday topic. In February 2007, I started The Angel Forever as a Live Journal blog which eventually moved to a self hosted domain with the same name in October 2007.

 Disney and Moi

Over the 2000 posts, I have written about being pregnant with my youngest, giving birth, my oldest starting school, my oldest switching schools, and soon my youngest heading to kindergarten. We have celebrated countless birthdays, events at school, and lots of Jewish holidays. The Angel Forever has documented our travels to Walt Disney World for the first time as a family in May 2009 and multiple times since then. I write about health topics (febrile seizures, getting your first mammogram), education topics, arts and crafts, and knitting. Since we adore books and I am a certified reading teacher, I started Tuesday Tales to focus weekly on books that we adore, reviews, meeting authors, literacy topics, and beyond. TheAngelForever Facebook

As my children get older, and life changes the topics within The Angel Forever will morph and grow with me. So my question to you this week:

How has your focus changed during your blogging tenure? Do you tend to go more with the flow, or do you have a certain niche that you write about?

My Views From Today

When I received my new phone Violet, I was thrilled to be able to try new and different apps with her. Early on, I found that I really liked making a collage of photos that I had taken throughout the day. I still do this and often use PhotoShake and AddWatermark to make ones like this:

Views from today 6-6-2012

I do not take specific photos for the collages, they are just randomly shot during the day. Then, at the end of the day, I can send the collage on Instagram stating it is my “Views from today” Tweet.

Once the kids are in bed, I sit with my phone for a few minutes to see what pictures I have snagged while out and about. It is interesting to see how, on some days, I have a lot of options to put into the collage. Then there are days where there are very few.

So my question to you this week:

Do you like to make photo collages? What programs do you use on your phone and/or computer to make them? I do use PhotoScape and PicMonkey (more on this soon) for blog collages and on my Facebook page.
