Baby It’s Cold Outside

I have lived in New York my entire life. The rather mild winter in 2011-2012 left us with almost no snow, ice, and bone chilling days. This winter started out in a similar fashion. December was filled with days that consistently went above the 32 degree mark. All of this changed when back to back snow storms hit our area.

Staying warm in Upstate NY

Not only did we suddenly have at least a foot of snow on the ground, the temperatures dropped. Snow is beautiful to look at, but it turns to ice, forms dams on houses, and makes maneuvering outside tricky. None of this really phases the boys, they are happy to stay outside and play.

Fun times in the snow

Thursday morning it was –2 when the boys had to walk into school. When you factor in the wind, it was –7. It was COLD and the sting factor was definitely there. I seriously will not complain about 30 degree weather again, it does seem rather balmy right now.

My question to you this week:

What is your ideal outdoors temperature and why do you prefer that?

It's Me

Nap Time Preferences

The days of children napping in our house are pretty much over. When someone takes a nap in our house, it usually means we just got back from Walt Disney World, or illness is lurking. Stuffed friends like Agent P and Perry may be put down for a nap, but the rest of us are not usually this lucky.

Stuffed friends take a nap

This week has been different. NHL, 9, has napped multiple days over his winter break. The first day he had a fever, but the other days he seemed fine. Perhaps he is ready for a growth spurt and just needs rest.

So my question to you this week is inspired by the recent siestas:

Do you like to take a nap and why do you have a preference?

It's Me

Thermal Laminating Fun

When I was teaching in a classroom, I was best friends with the thermal laminator in our building. I used it for student work, for protecting my reference tools, and making sure that decorations were ready to use for multiple years. Yes, I spent many hours learning how to make that giant thermal laminator get a work out.

For quite some time, I was toying with getting a laminator at home. The other day, A Frugal Friend posted about a one day special on a Scotch Thermal Laminator on Amazon. When she told me that she has used it for two years now and that I would love it, I was sold. Of course the one day price was even better ($16.99 – now under $30). Yes, I bought the Scotch Thermal Laminator 2 Roller System on Friday and it arrived Tuesday. Wednesday morning my kiddo (home sick) helped me to test it out.

Scotch Thermal Laminator

I asked JSL to find art that he had made. Of course, he picked one that would not fit in a pouch at first. Not to worry, we found some on a regular sized piece of paper and put it into a pouch. While that was waiting, I set up the machine. It was SO easy to use and the instructions were great.

Getting Laminator Ready

The machine did not take long to heat up. Once it was set, I simply placed the Thermal Pouch into the machine and it literally fed right in without me doing more. JSL was mesmerized and curious what it would be like after.

Scotch Laminator Testing

The artwork that JSL made was now protected and ready for him to take around and share with others. Of course, once you laminate one item you, you start to think about other things to create. My mind immediately went to maps for the little kiddo. He loves playing with them and using them for pirate treasure hunts. So, I pulled out some extra Disney Parks maps and put them onto a piece of computer paper. That was then placed into a pouch to laminate.

Disney Park maps in the laminator

JSL was in love and later on we made one more map so all four of the Walt Disney World parks were accounted for. In the end, I was happy with my purchase and my kiddo now can not wait to try the laminator (he says this in a Dr. Doofenshmirtz voice) again.

Items Laminated at Home

So my question this week is inspired by my new laminator:

What would you love to laminate if you had a machine and why? Yes, I am also using this to come up with more ideas.

Disclosure: An Amazon Affiliate link is included in this post for the thermal laminator mentioned. I will receive a percentage of money for the sale should you opt to purchase it through that link.

Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, TechyDad and I were whisked away to a magical land in Florida. Most people know this destination as Walt Disney World. We were there to experience the opening of the New Fantasyland on December 6. New Fantasyland Opening

New lands filled with Ariel, Belle, and circus characters were waiting to officially be opened via a royal celebration. Ginnifer Goodwin came out to begin the ceremony at Cinderella’s Castle. You may know her better as Snow White on the ABC hit show Once Upon A Time.

Ginnifer introduced Jordin Sparks, the winner of season six of American Idol, who came to sing a medley of songs from Disney movies. Of course, she was joined by a large group of Disney character celebrities.

At the end of the beautiful medley, Mickey Mouse came out along with Tom Staggs, chairman of the Walt Disney Company’s Parks and Resorts division, to finish up the presentation and really get the celebration started. This is what it looked like moments after:

Opening of New Fantasyland

It truly was a moment that dreams are made of for a life long Disney fan. My question to you this week:

If you could have been at the opening of a location or destination over history, what would it have been and why?

It's Me

Disclosure: TechyDad was invited to the New Fantasyland media event December 5-7. Disney paid for his travel, our park tickets, room, along with some extra surprises. I was his guest and invited to special events, but paid for my travel and an extra night at the resort. Also note that Disney never asked me to blog about this event. As a long time Disney fan, it is my pleasure to share my experiences.

Birthday with Mickey

I have always dreamed about being at Walt Disney World for my birthday. This year, I am coming very close to this dream thanks to our trip for the New Fantasyland media event . You see, I will actually be leaving for home just hours before my birthday. Of course, this means I will be celebrating my birthday Friday evening.

Mickey Cupcake

TechyDad told me to pick out a restaurant to have my birthday dinner at. I really want to go to California Grill at The Contemporary Resort, but there were no reservation available. Since we want to be at Epcot and Hollywood Studios that evening, I looked at those locations, and The Boardwalk for options. In the end, I decided to try something new. When we had to cancel our Labor Day 2011 trip, one of our meals was going to be at Les Chefs de France. So yes, I will be eating at Epcot on my almost birthday in a French restaurant under the Eiffel Tower.

So my question to you this week:

If you could eat at any location and/or restaurant for your birthday, where would it be and why?

It's Me
