The importance of date nights

Date nights are not something that TechyDad and I frequently get. Life just gets really busy and we never seem to coordinate a time to go out. Sure, we watch movies at home when the kids are asleep. Sometimes, we even break out a board game like we used to before having kids. Still, it is nice to go out to a child free dinner at a location more for adults.

On Saturday night, my parents offered to watch the boys so we could go out to dinner. We had a Restaurants.com certificate to use at a local restaurant called Mangia. It was the night before Halloween and pretty quiet when we got there. We decided to share an appetizer (we hardly ever do this) and decided on our meals. Here is what we ordered:

Our dinner at Mangia

It was a very nice meal and delicious (even reheated the next day for leftovers). We tried not to talk about the kids too much and focused on other items. We planned sitting down and testing out some new games that we had to review and making time to watch a movie that I took out from the library. It was a great meal and very relaxing. With any luck, we will be able to get out again before my birthday in December.

So my question for you today:

If you have kids, do you make time for a date night with your spouse? For everyone, what would your ideal date night be?

Mobile Cupcakes by Fluffalicious

Imagine being able to order gourmet cupcakes and have them delivered to your house, or picking them up at a mobile cupcake truck. Dream no more, this is the reality for the Capital District of New York.

Fluffalicious Cupcake Truck

When I first saw the Fluffalicious truck driving around the region, I was curious. Curiosity led me to Facebook where I found more information. They have a website coming soon Fluffalicious.com, but it is still being constructed. On Monday, I read that the truck was going to be stationed near a store that I had to go to. This was perfect timing. TechyDad was home sick that day, and I thought cupcakes would help to perk him up.

When I arrived at the Fluffalicious truck, I was second in line. There were plenty of cupcakes left and a lot of flavors to pick from. It was a bit hard to narrow it down to six, but I managed. Here are the cupcakes that I bought for our family:

Our Cupcake 6 Pack

The first night, we selected three cupcakes and cut them into four pieces to share. See, we were not piggies and wanted to have something to look forward to the next night. I plan on further reviewing our cupcake experience, but wanted to quickly note –> THEY WERE DELICIOUS!

The cupcakes were fresh, moist, and full of the flavors you would expect from their titles. We took a lot of photos of the inside of the cupcakes, because they really do tell a story. They did not disappoint and my two big kids (that including TechyDad) keep asking to try more.

So my question for you this week is inspired by Flaffalicious:

Do you have a mobile cupcake truck by you? If you could create your own cupcake flavor masterpiece, what would it be?

Multi-tasking while I read

Yes, you read that right. I like to multi-task while I am reading. Time is tight here and being able to do all of the items that I want to do, along with what I have to do is tough. In January, I wrote about my new found love of reading books on CD while knitting. During the summer months, I must admit, I was not keeping up with this as much. I put the knitting needles down some and was reading actual books.

Now the weather has shifted and I am trying to work on a blanket for the boys. After the boys are in bed and my writing is done, I have been working on my big knitting project and reading books.

Knit 6 Purl 6

I just finished reading The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff. In just about a week, any chance I had, I read this 15 CD long book. (Loved it – more on that coming soon). Thanks to my little MP3 player, I was able to take it to listen while waiting for JSL at school, while knitting, cleaning and anything else. Today, I started listening to The Help by Kathryn Stockett and also have The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

Books on deck

Since it has been a while since I last asked, I would love some more book suggestions (I’m good on the kiddie literature books).

What are some books that you would recommend that I put on my list to read while multitasking. I am open to all genres and if you have listened to them on CD and liked them even better (the reader is key in a lot of these audio books).

Introducing KidsFunPlaza

Over the last few months, I have mentioned projects, deadlines, articles to write and blog posts for another project in my Tweets. Up until this post, I have  been pretty quiet about it here on my own blog. I have been working on a new adventure. To say that this never would have been possible without social media, specifically Twitter, would be an understatement.

Quite a while ago, I "met" @AnaRC on Twitter. We started chatting about crazy New York winters and Disney. Ana moved to Northeast NY from her previous home of Western NY. Fast forward to present day and I am working on her latest pet project called KidsFunPlaza. This project is a dream that she had and is living out. Not only is there a blog, but a new magazine for the Northeast region of New York. Check out our first baby (with my second baby modeling it):

New Project

I am writing the toddler and kiddo articles on the KidsFunPlaza Blog as well as in the magazine. In addition to this, I am doing interviews in the magazine for the Parent and Educator of the month. Our second magazine is going to print next week and I can not wait to see it. The blog is not region specific and has articles that are written by an amazing group of women that I will introduce you to soon in another post. For now, please say hello to those of us on Twitter –> @CutestKidEver, @TheCraningGap, @SandraFoyt and @AlbanyMommy (if I missed someone please let me know). The magazine is a local resource for parents, grandparents, and others that will be available in locations for FREE. Eventually, KidsFunPlaza will be expanding to other regions and will be a fantastic resource for people throughout the country.

So my question to you this week is:

Do you have a free local parent magazine/paper near you? If you do what do you like/dislike about it? If you do not, what would you like to see in one some day?

Also be sure to enter my CardsDirect $50 gift card giveaway. TechyDad is also hosting a LuLu.com Photo Book giveaway.

Think pink October 2010

Today is October first and begins National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Last year, I wrote about two people in my life that are survivors of this nasty disease. Unfortunately, not everyone diagnosed with Breast Cancer is that lucky. Many brave women lose their battle with this beast.

Below, in the middle, is my friend Debra. She is a fellow Disney fanatic that I spent time with at BlogHer in August.

Think pink at BlogHer

Debra (A Frugal Friend) lost her mother to breast cancer almost five years ago. In her memory, Debra is hosting her 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event . To find out more about the event please click on the button below.

Frugal Friend

I hope you will join me in supporting Debra’s event in honor of those that have had their lives forever changed by Breast Cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Please remember to check your breasts every month, or remind the women in your life to do so. Don’t put off having your yearly mammogram and be sure to have a baseline done when your doctor recommends it if you have never had one before. Early detection is key!

My question to you this week:

Do you know someone that has battled Breast Cancer? Please take a moment to leave a shout out in their honor.

Also be sure to enter my CardsDirect $50 gift card giveaway. TechyDad is also hosting a LuLu.com Photo Book and  Ziploc product giveaway.
