Lots and Lots of Snow

The winter started off kind of slow here in the snow department. Over the last three weeks, Mother Nature is laughing down at a lot of us. Tuesday night into Wednesday, we got at least 13” of fresh snow.

While the snow looks very pretty, it can be tough to deal with. It melts and creates ice, which is beyond dangerous to drive on. Roofs may form ice damns that leak back into homes. If there is too much snow, you can have trouble locating a place to shovel more of it.

Some Snowy Fun

On the flip side, playing in the snow is lots of fun. Listening to your children laugh while they make snow angels, go on sleigh rides, and chase each other is priceless.

So my question to you this week is:

What is your favorite and least favorite part about snow? If you are not in a snowy area, I hate you… –er I mean what is the first thing you would like to do in snow?

Color Me Happy Crayons

I love to color. Yes, I am an adult and I love crayons, paper, coloring books, and more. When I was teaching, I used my students as an excuse to go out and get packages of markers, colored pencils, and crayons. Each year I loved seeing the perfect new boxes of items fresh for creative fun.

Now I have a secret. We have lots of crayons in the house for the kids. I also have a box that is just for me. MINE! They are all mine and I do not share with the boys. I bought them to try with NHL, but fell so much in love with them that I save them to use for my own projects. These are my precious Crayola crayons:

My crayons

I love these crayons because you do not have to deal with pulling paper off them, or sharpening. They are like a marker pen with crayon inside. The best part, they have even helped me to plan out a new knitting project for the year.

So with this in mind I ask you:

Do you like to color? Are you more of a crayon, marker, or colored pencil kind of person and why?

Setting goals and making them happen

Several years ago I fell in love with a knitting project. I found it when looking in a book. What book you ask? This pretty well known knitting book:Mason Dixon Knitting

The knitting project that I craved to try is called a Log Cabin blanket. I understood the concept, but for the longest time I could not figure out how to change colors with this technique. I kept waiting to try this out myself and had it as a goal.

Wednesday night I did a search on You Tube and found a video showing how to do exactly what I needed. It seemed easy enough to follow. So, I took out a bunch of my old scraps of cotton yarn.

Lots of scrap yarn

Next thing I knew, I had a small little Log Cabin square going. It isn’t perfect – I think I added a stitch in my original color change. Still, I am quite proud to say that I figured it out and can eventually try some larger projects with this technique.

Here are some photos of the mini Log Cabin as I worked on it.

This is the finished piece. I put it on my laptop to give you an idea of the final size.

My knitting goal helped me to come up with my final Aloha Friday question for 2010:

What are some of your goals for 2011?

I like to set goals to accomplish, rather than resolutions that quickly get crushed or forgotten. Happy New Year to everyone. May the coming year be filled with good health, magical memories, and fun times!

2010 Holiday Cards

TechyDad and I decided years ago that we were going to send out New Years cards to our family and friends. This covers Chanukah, Christmas, and everything else for pretty much everyone that we know.

Of course, there is another perk with this. When we are slower getting the cards made, they are not late . . . win-win for everyone! This year we had a photo shoot with the boys in their Toy Story pajamas. NHL wanted to wear the Woody ones and JSL selected his Buzz Lightyear. Here is our holiday card for everyone:

2011 Internet Holiday Card

So my question to you this week:

Do you send out Holiday/New Years cards to family and friends? If you do where do get them from?  (Ours were purchased from Winkflash)

Hamburger heaven

We do not eat a lot of meat at home. Thanks to the cost of kosher meat, we mainly eat vegetarian meals. When we go out, I do like to have a turkey or beef burger from time to time. On my birthday, my mother took me out to a local restaurant call The Standard. I had an absolutely amazing burger there. It was perfect in every way. Check it out (kosher keeping relatives – please look away):

The mushrooms, provolone cheese, and grilled onion made my lunch. The fries were ok, but looked more pretty in the presentation.

Thursday TechyDad had a meeting, so I decided to take the boys to an early dinner. I had a coupon for Fuddruckers and Red Robin that were going to expire. Since it had been a long time, I opted to go to Red Robin. Here is what I had:

The burger was similar to the one that I had a week ago, but it just did not live up to the masterpiece from The Standard. There was too much garlic taste. This time, the fries stole the show for me.

So this week, I have a meaty question for you:

Whether you eat a veggie, salmon, turkey, or beef burger – what toppings do you love to compliment it?
