Historic Nunley’s Carousel in Long Island

While visiting Long Island to see TechyDad’s parents, we had a few places that we hoped to visit. One of those locations was the Long Island Children’s Museum in Garden City. Thanks to our science museum membership, we were able to go in for free. We had a wonderful time exploring everything within the museum (more on that coming soon). When we were finished, we decided to walk toward the outdoor display at the Long Island Air and Space Museum. It was getting late and we wanted to beat the traffic heading back toward home. As we started walking, I noticed a pathway that lead to a beautiful carousel. Inside the building was Nunley’s Carousel.

Since we were not going to have time to go to another location, we allowed the boys to go for one ride. NHL, JSL, and TechyDad enjoyed their ride. While they were on the horses, I was in charge of the camera and loved watching the details on this historic carousel as it kept going around and around.

So my question to you this week is inspired by the carousel that we saw:

If you could make your dream carousel, what would it look like? I’m always curious to know what you could have for people to ride on, what features it would include, and music that would play while riders enjoyed their time on board.

Smartphone Typing Options

In my pre-Smartphone world, I was a firm believer that I had to have a cell phone with a keyboard. In my defense, it helped me to text, Tweet, and update Facebook via SMS capabilities. The prices were similar and it saved me from using the alternative method of multi-key alphabet . My world changed when I got my first smartphone. Suddenly, I was thrust into the world of predominately touch screen phones. I have to admit, I never looked back once I was there.

Of course, there are many long time smartphone users that really like their keyboard option when using the phone. The options for this type of phone are very limited these days. Several months ago, BlackBerry announced their newest phone the Z10 and long time users gasped at a BlackBerry device without the keyboard. As a Verizon Lifestyle Blogger, I received the Z10 and it was a great phone. I actually had a difficult time understanding the need for the alternative typing space. Of course, I was not accustomed to a BlackBerry device with said keyboard and was used to a larger screen for viewing items on my phone.

Nobody should have been surprised when shortly after the release of the Z10, BlackBerry introduced the world to the Q10. My husband uses a BlackBerry for work and agreed to help me test out the Q10 (link to phone specs on Verizon Wireless website). As you can see, it looks a lot like his previous BlackBerry device and will make hardcore fans happy with the brand favorite QWERTY Keyboard. I have to admit, I am intrigued by the Q10 and am itching to see how it compares to the Z10.

BlackBerry Bold vs Q10

In addition to this, the Q10 has the new BlackBerry Hub, BBM Chat, BlackBerry Remember, and other features. There is a lot more to share about the Q10 and that will be coming soon. For now, I leave you with my Aloha Friday question of the week:

If you were to create your perfect smartphone, would it have a keyboard or touchscreen and why?

It's Me

Disclosure: As a member of the Verizon Lifestyle Bloggers, I receive different devices to check out in my life. There is no other compensation. I am a long time Verizon customer, and all opinions are my own.

Saving Mr. Banks and Disney Movie Favorites

It is no secret that I am a huge Disney fan. I adore learning about the history related to the man that made so many magical memories from my life and countless others possible. In December, movie goers around the world will be able to head to theaters to see Saving Mr. Banks featuring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers.

Saving Mr. Banks - from Disney Pictures

Saving Mr. Banks is the untold story based on true events of how Walt Disney obtained the rights to make the movie Mary Poppins. Mr. Disney promised his daughter twenty years before that he would bring Mary Poppins to life. Disney Pictures just released a trailer for the movie that left me with goose bumps. I seriously can not wait to see the movie. Here it is to see for yourself.

As we all wait until December for the release of the new movie, my Aloha Friday question of the week is: What is your favorite Disney Movie to date? It could be an animated classic or one featuring live actors. I know I am not sure if I could select just one, so do not feel limited.

It's Me

Disclosure: I received information about Saving Mr. Banks from Disney PR and was under no obligation to share. As a life long fan, I was excited about this movie and wanted to use it within a post.

Yay or Nay to the Beach

Growing up, my family would often go to Ocean City Maryland for a week during the summer. While I loved the time with our extended family, I was not a fan of the beach. Do not get me wrong, I love sitting by the water and listening to the waves and sounds. I am just not a fan of being in the sand and blazing sun. I burn easily and do not tan no matter what, so give me a book and some shade and I’m good go. If I want to cool off in water, I prefer a pool and chlorine as well.

On Independence Day, we had a magical day at Saratoga Lake with family. It was a gorgeous day. The sun came out, there was no rain (finally), and even the humidity was not too bad once you were on a boat. The wind in our hair and the views of the lake were amazing.

Saratoga Lake

When we got off the boat, we promised the boys we would go to the beach. Please insert Twilight Zone music here. I told TechyDad that I would head down with him, but I had no plans to put my bathing suit on and would prefer just to be a spectator. He knows why and was fine. So I found a chair, plunked myself down, and watched the boys. They were laughing, splashing, and having a wonderful time swimming in the lake. I sat there in the sun enjoying the view of the boats, water, and my boys smiling. I did wander over to the water a few times to get some photos and to cool my feet off.

Here is the view from my perching location. Please excuse the toe nails that are not pretty (need to do that one day) and the do not look directly into my pale legs.

Beach time - yay or nay

So my question to you this week is inspired by our sandy visit:

Are you a fan of the beach or more of a pool person? I would love to know which one and why you feel this way.

Favorite Dinosaurs

On Tuesday morning, NHL had his braces put on his teeth. To help distract him for a little while, the boys and I went to miSci to explore some of the new exhibits for an hour. While the Dinosaurs! area was not technically open, many of the sections were able to be seen while we were there.

We roamed around and the boys had their photos taken with triceratops together. Then, JSL put his head into T-Rex’s mouth. It was either time for his dental exam or he was making the kiddo lunch. We saw a few more of the areas that were visible. At the time, Instagram video was not working, so I made this Vine to share.

A few of the areas were still roped off until the member preview on Thursday evening and the official opening on June 29.

We went to the members preview and we had a wonderful time looking at all of the dinosaurs. While we had technically seen them three years ago while visiting the Buffalo Museum of Science, it was interesting to see them in different areas of miSci in Schenectady. More video and photos to come as I go through the photos and we head back to visit them again when it is a bit less crowded over the next few months.

So my question to you this week is inspired by the new exhibit:

What are the favorite dinosaurs and why? Perhaps you wrote a report in school as a child, or your son/daughter likes one for a special reason.
