Hobbies that are Different

Yesterday, I wrote about a word that really bothered me. In Strange is as Strange Does, I mentioned how one simple word got under my skin. Since that day, I am embracing the word, but still believe that it should be cautiously used.

We are each unique individuals. The items that make us who we are and may seem “strange” to one person, is likely what attracts us to our friends. Over twenty-five years ago, I learned this hobby:

Knitting hobby

Let me tell you, knitting as an elementary school child was not and likely is not popular. It was probably considered strange by some. Still, each summer my friend J and I would sit outside after playing and knit. I would also knit with my Aunt T and Nana. It was nice to have a hobby that others I knew had. Knitting would be something that I would pick up from time to time. That was until JSL was born and it really stuck with me. For five years now, I have made countless washcloths, scarves, blankets, and more. Yes, even Clumsy and Snowflake have been recipients of my knitting.

Knitting for friends

Although knitting is more accepted these days, people still look at you a bit when you pull out a bag and work on something in public. It just is not as socially acceptable as, say, reading a book while in a waiting room, standing outside of school, or at the library. The reality is I do not care. I knit when I want to, what I want to, and because I want to. That’s the beauty of who we are, we do things that have meaning to us and make us happy inside and out.

So my question to you this week:

What hobby do you have that others may look at and consider a bit different or perhaps strange, but it makes you happy?

It's Me

My Disney Dooney Confession

Let’s be honest, we all have something in the back of our mind that we really, really, really want. I’m not talking a new car, house, or vacation. I’m talking something more in our immediate reach. I suppose you could put a tablet/iPad into this category. Even that is often something that many of us would use for professional needs, not just a desire.

Disney fans will likely be familiar with the Dooney & Bourke collection that are made for the parks.

 Hello Disney Dooney

Originally, they were only available at Disney parks and cruises, but now some can be ordered from The Disney Store. I once wrote about saving Pluto thanks to a Dooney. Alas, I did not win, but it was fun trying. While at Walt Disney World, I would stop and swoon over the bags. I could have, maybe should have gotten one, but I was being practical. Of course, I kept taking photos and sharing with my friends on Twitter that often talk about their Disney Dooney & Bourke purchases.

More Disney Dooney Goodness

Yes, I even asked Ellen stop in the hall at the Yacht Club to model her cute new bag. It goes so well with her ears don’t you think?

Elleinthecity

So my question to you is inspired by Disney Dooney & Bourke:

If you were able to splurge on an item you really want, but may not be practical, what is it and why? Remember no house, car, vacation, or item that would be for professional gain.

It's Me

Fun Classroom Themes

When I was teaching younger kids, one of the items that was fun was to pick a unit plan, theme, or other item to cover with the kids. In first grade, this would involve lesson planning across academic areas and lots of items for center activities. One of my favorites was for If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and also the Five Senses. Yes, there are days when I really miss that part of being in the classroom.

As the parent of a child in preschool, it has been fun to see what his teachers pick and choose each week to do with kids that are now 4 and 5 years old. Tuesday morning, we walked into the classroom and the theme was very clear.

New theme time

The details in the classroom were amazing. There were dinosaurs romping all over the place. They were here:

A dino bridge

Yes, there were even more dinosaurs over on the other side of the room. The best part: Laurie Berkner’s We are the Dinosaurs was playing as the kids explored the new dinoland.

Even more dinosaur fun

When JSL went in the next day, I suggested wearing one of his dinosaur shirts. Little did we know that his shirt would be perfect inspiration for a project they were making. Check out their dino hats.

Dino Hat Time

So my question to you week is inspired by my son’s creative teachers:

What theme in school was your favorite as a child? If you can not recall, how about a favorite your child has done or perhaps one you wish you had done.

It's Me

P.S. If you are in a dinosaur dancing mood, here’s a little Laurie Berkner video.

A Whoopee Cushion Parenting Moment

Alright everyone, it’s time to fess up on something. Do you often cringe when your child has the opportunity to pick something from a prize box? It may be a prize after having a shot at the doctor, doing something well at school, or trading tickets in at an arcade. Let’s be real here – none of the prizes are usually meant to last forever and can often be annoying to those around them after they come home.

Case in point: This is a prize that my son picked our after an appointment the other day.

Whoopee Cushion

No, I am not kidding you. This came home with us and I cringed. I did not want to be THAT parent that said no, so I allowed it. Soon after we arrived at home, the fart jokes, loud blasts, and laughing began. It was cute at first, but then it got old quickly. This lead to me sending out a Tweet. The Tweet was replied to by Janice Person. As I was Tweeting, the boys were trying to figure out how to make a bigger, louder, and more impressive fart noise from said Whoopee Cushion.

First group of Tweets

Almost immediately after I sent that last Tweet out, I heard a giant BOOM from where the two boys were playing. I knew it was not a good sign, well not for the Whoopee Cushion at least. Tears, screams, and more Tweets followed.

Second group of Tweets

After the kids calmed down, and I gathered my composure back up I eventually took this photographic proof:

There was laughter

So my question to you this week:

What is the most annoying prize that that your child has ever won or received and why?

It's Me.

Snacking on Kim’s Magic Pop

Trying to find a healthy snack food that is low calorie, low fat, filling, and tastes good can be a difficult task. A few months ago, we were visiting my brother and his family. One night, he shared a snack that was absolutely delicious. I was immediately jealous because it was amazing and we had nothing like it near us. It was called Kim’s Magic Pop.

Yummy goodness

The months went by and I never thought about them again until Nana and Papa had them at their house the other day. Yes, they were able to find them locally. Now, I think we may have a bit of an addiction. The boys and I love them and the kids loved watching them get made. Thanks to the Delice Global website, we now know all of the flavors that Kim’s Magic Pop could come in. They include:

  • Original
  • Onion
  • Cinnamon
  • Cheddar Cheese
  • Potato
  • Strawberry
  • Whole Wheat
  • 7 Grain (coming soon)
  • Super Fiber (coming soon)
  • Honey Wheat (coming soon)

Although I like them plain and right out of the bag, I think they would also be delicious with some hummus. No doubt we will continue to experiment with different ways to enjoy them. At just 15 calories each, the wow factor when crunching them has been worth the wait.

 Strawberry Magic Pop

My question to you this week:

What is a new snack food that you are currently enjoying and why?

It's Me

Disclosure: We have paid for many bags of Kim’s Magic Pop with our own money. Just thought of this post one day while I was crunching on a delicious snack and wanted to share.
