It has not been a very good week with electronics in our household. First, my cell phone decides to spontaneously crack. Apparently it could not handle the extreme cold and the hard plastic just gave up. Of course, my warranty is no longer valid. For $50 they would give me an identical phone, but I am eligible for new phone in June. We will be digging out one of our old phones until after our trip to Disney World.
The real kicker is this:
My precious digital camera is basically dead. The item that I keep with me practically at all times has kicked the bucket. For several months, I blamed our rechargeable batteries for everything that was happening. Little did I know, it was the camera the entire time. The Canon camera that I purchased in the fall just over a year ago is gone! The battery sensors are not working properly. The other day I put in fresh batteries, took 3 photos and the camera started to flash low battery and then shut down. JL took the batteries to work to check their voltage readings. Sure enough, they were 100% perfect. Do you know how many stinking batteries I thought were no good because of this camera? Grrrr!
This will be the second digital dud that I have purchased. It just does not seem right to me for a camera to only last 12-14 months (my last one did not even make it that long – that was a Fuji). Of course, the review for this camera were amazing when we bought it. Then last month JL did some research and others were complaining about the same battery sensor troubles. Canon will allow us to ship it to them to check and then tell us the cost of repair. My theory, it will cost way more to fix this camera than just purchasing a new one. Does this make me angry? YES!
So my question to you today:
Do you have any suggestions on a new digital camera? I want one that will last several years (a fair request I believe), has its own lithium battery within (no more replacement batteries), and is portable for on the go. One other item, I would prefer something other than Fuji and Canon for obvious reasons.

I have a Kodak easy share that I like if you are looking for a point and shoot you may want to look into that
I don’t know much about cameras. I also have a Kodak Easy Share that I like.
Sorry about your Camera! Yes- you definitely need a new one. I have the newer version of that one (the AS590) and LOVE it! And right now they are going for about $130. My sis has a cannon too…it’s a more sleek model…and she has had it for about a year now and raves about it. I’ll find out what the model is.
Sorry about your camera. I feel as if everything breaks these days. Remember when we used to have the same tv for at least 10 years?
Anyway, I love, love, my panasonic lumix. I forget what the model is, but it is one of the one’s that looks like an SLR. I’ve had it for a couple of years, but when I bought it, it was relatively well priced (under $300). It’s lightweight, great quality, good zoom (not the kind that just crops the photo, lessening the quality) and very intuitive with easy automatic override settings plus a great “idiot” setting that works in a pinch.
Sorry to hear about your camera. I use to have a Kodak and it was great!!! Last year or maybe two we went to Canon and got the PowerShot SX100IS. We love it!! Good luck searching for a new camera. Cnet.com is always good for reviews. Also I tried out the touch screen ones and were not fond of them. Everytime I would hold the camera up I would accidently hit the screen and mess everything up. Go to Best Buy or the mall and fondle cameras so you can figure out the features that suit you and the size. My camera now is the size of your dead one. It is fine for me and the only reason I really got it was because of the zoom on it. I wanted a nice zoom and pixel size. That was the two features important to me. Good luck!!
I have no advice, but now I’m freaked out – I have the same camera! (It’s the A560 version.) I sure hope that it doesn’t break for me too. I like it O.K., but I really want something with more bells and whistles. We had to buy this one at the time because finances were just not there for something nicer. Someday I’ll replace it…
I was lucky enough to win a sony cybershot and I absolutely love it! That was upgrading from my old old hp camera, though it served its purpose for the 5 years I had it!
I just have a Kodak EasyShare but it’s never given me a lick of trouble. I love it.
We have a Kodak and you plug it into the wall or the computer to recharge. Love it.
Please don’t scare me!! I have the EXACT same digital camera. If yours died, then that means mine is probably only a matter of time.
I’ve been eying some of the new Sony’s though.
RIP little Canon friend of mine.
Oh I would be mad about that.
I have two digital Camera’s. One is a Canon Power Shot Elph. We bought it a year after digital camera’s came out so it is probably 6 years old. Scratched and banged up pretty good but still works really well.
Last year my husband bought an even nicer camera that does a lot more than our Elph. It is a Panasonic Lumix and it is very nice and have not had any issues with it but only had it about a year and a half.
Both cameras have the battery packs that you charge on the special chargers. We always buy a second battery so we always have one charged.
Good luck finding a new camera.
Wow–I can’t believe your camera lasted only that long. I have a Canon SD something…I’ve had it for about 3 or 4 years now. The camera I had prior was a Canon also–and it still works.
Sorry, I like Canon, I’ve had good experiences, so I don’t have any other recommendations =).
Wow. I am so behind on the new and hip cameras (I’ve had my trusty Kodak digital for almost 4 years) but that stinks! I hope you get a new one, soon!
No. We have a Canon Power Shot A 560 and I do not recommend it. It has a terrible delay in between pictures. We used to have a Kodak Easy Share and that one was pretty good (died because I dropped it). Good Luck
Nope. I don’t think they make ’em to last long.

Gah! Cameras always break before a big trip, eh? I don’t have any recommendations, but I hope you can get a nice camera for your Disney trip.
I have a Kodak Easyshare, what model escapes me right now-it’s got 12x digital zoom if that helps. I have had two previous Easyshares prior to this and they lasted a few years each and took nice photos.
It seems that they are making cameras with fancier gadgets all the time. We have had a few different digital cameras in the last few years, always one step up better than the last.
I don’t know much about them, good luck.
I really don’t have an answer for you . . . sorry. My camera is a cheapo camera that came with a photo printer. I still have the camera but there are no extra buttons or any fun extras.
I’ve only had a Canon! I can’t believe it broke after only a year! Sheesh.
Wow, everyone has an opinion on digital cameras. :) I use a Sony Cybershot. I bought it is 2006 and it still works fine to this day. I had a fugi before that and it did not last nearly as long as this one has. Sony has my vote.
I’m sorry, but I can not be of any help to you . . . just like at home. lol
I have a 10.2 MP Samsung that i LOVE LOVE LOVE….I actually upgraded mine @ Christmas and gave C the last years 10.0 samsung because i wanted a skinnier one.
I havent had any issues with either of them or the samsung camcorder i bought 3 years ago.
My parents both have Fuji Fine pix in different versions.
I have taken pix with all of these cameras and really like them all.
Theirs all use reg batteries and mine has a built in battery thing and charges with USB cord either plugged to a charger or into my laptop.
I absolutely LOVE mine. It has a 3X optical and 5X digi zoom, I get awesome pics, lag time is short….
tons and tons of features…
remind me and i will check the exact model for ya tomorrow(its in the van)

I have a Canon Power Shot A400-it’s old but no problems at all. I also drink peach ice tea(diet)
I have a Kodak Easy Share too and so far, so good. I have trouble with the pictures being fuzzy but I had the same problem with my HP so I think it’s just me. I had an Olympus I loved, my first ever digital camera, but it was too bulky and I wanted something I could slip into my pocket. The Easy Share can be charged by USB or a wall charger, which is a great convenience. I also bought an extra battery but I don’t think I’ve ever used it – the battery lasts a LONG time.
We tend to stick with the Kodak Brand.. Which we love.. have had no problems and excellent picture quality!!
I definitely loved my Casio Exilim and it still works great, has for years….but don’t drop it.
After some research, however, I would definitely suggest a Panasonic Lumix – their lenses are special in some way and they take amazing pictures. My dad has one and I am so in love with it. It’s almost as good as a DSLR which is saying a lot….but it’s point and shoot, really, and rechargeable. If you want, I can look up the model number.
Good luck!
We’ve got a Sony Cybershot something or other. If you want more details, let me know. We replaced our 5 year old Sony Cybershot this past summer–I think it served us pretty well!
I have a Sony Cybershot, too. I love it and it’s so easy to use!
