My question for this week is inspired by my need to return items to the library:

Do you frequent the library or do you prefer to buy your own books?

I have to admit that I own a lot of books. However, over the last two years I have been going to the library 1-2 times a week. I guess as a tax payer I realize that a lot of my money is going to our local library. Why should I pay an arm and a leg for a book I will likely only read one time? Heck, then there is the guilt if you spend a lot of money on a book you do not like.

As a child I used to go to the library often. My friend J and I would go and spend forever searching for just the right books to keep us reading over the summer. Now I have passed this love for the library onto both of my boys. NHL and JSL both enjoy going to the library. They both have a blast picking out their own books, and even DVDs on special occasions.

So does this mean that I never buy books? Not on your life! Our home library is still growing, just mostly with kids books. I owned a TON of childrens books before having kids thanks to  stocking up while student teaching. Let’s just say I love Scholastic Book orders!  I have bought a lot of picture and chapter books though the years. I still buy books for my boys and always will because I believe that our childrens home library must always grow.

I always buy. A few of my friends have the same reading taste as I, do which loan books to each other. But if I really like them after I read them, I buy my own.

  • Jen says:

I tend to buy my books. But, I should be hitting the library more.

    Happy Aloha friday! :)

  • Both :)

We borrow as much as we can from the public library but sometimes the new releases are not there and I couldn’t wait so I buy. Yes, I love books :)

    Happy Friday!

I’m a big library user. I’m also there 1-2 times a week. I do a lot of inter-library loans so just run in and get what’s on hold for me. I used to buy a lot but realized the same as you – my tax money is going to the library, and I was spending way too much on books I only read once since I’m not a re-reader.

I need to bring the boys with me to the library more, though Alex just likes to use the computer there and isn’t so much interested in getting books, even though he loves to read.

My mom and my cousins give both boys books at Christmas so I don’t feel as bad for not buying them books myself as frequently as I’d like. But books are expensive! They both have bookshelves full so they’re far from lacking.

  • Hate to say it…I don’t even know where the library is in this dang town! Moved here about 2 years ago.

I have a running list of books I like to buy on Amazon, so I guess that’s my answer :)

If you’re bored…tagged you….visit my blog for the list.
    No pressure.

I buy them! The have a huge book sale here on Labor day where books are 50 cents each! I buy BUNCHES there..and then randomly buy others!

  • sagemom says:

I prefer to buy my own books…because DS always tears and rips them apart =). Can’t be doing that to the library books!

  • I use the library for reference materials and participate in pay it forwards for novels or pick them up at a discount store.

  • Jamie says:

hey thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving me comments. i am so sorry, i havent gotten to your’s until now.
to answer your question, i prefer to by my own books. That way I can always keep them, let people borrow them, and save them for my kids when they are older.

  • Oh, we’re HUGE on going to the library. My son loves books and I love movies, music, and books on CD. This is the best way for us to have our turn with the things we like. I think it’s great for Alex too. He learns to love the library at a young age and I hope that lesson sticks with him forever.

    Aloha!

  • Tena says:

I use to buy books, but it got to the point where my check book was crying! Now I try to get them all at the library and only cave whe the wait is too long!

  • I have tons of books in storage from when I taught. We buy books at garage sales, sometimes. But we go to the library for their community puzzle hours and story hours…and to check out books!

  • Nina says:

I take my son to the library often. He has a bookshelf full of books and after it was filled up I decided this was crazy to buy all these so we started rounds at the library. I also will find a book I want and I will just request it online so that when I go with my son it is ready for me to just pick up. He doesn’t like browsing books in the adult section.

  • Anne says:

library by the time I put gas in the tank there’s no money for books lol

  • Jenni says:

I do both! I love my local library but due to budget cuts it is no open very often.

  • Kim says:

I mostly buy. I don’t use my current public library for a variety of reasons. The last straw was the day I went in to pay the fine for my overdue books. I always tell my students that if they owe a fine they need to pay it cheerfully and I won’t scold them for being late.

K (handing books to clerk at counter, sounding apologetic): I’m a bad librarian. I need to pay my fine. These are late.

DALC (in the most condescending tone you can imagine): Well, dear, you’re not a librarian. You’re a library patron.

K (pissed now): No, I am a librarian. (pays fine and vows to never return)

Fast forward 7 years and one child later. Skulks in and takes out a few kids books for variety at home. They still stink and I’m moving soon and won’t have to go there again.

Mostly, I buy books for my kids. I do occasionally buy stuff for me. I read lots from my school library and when necessary, borrow through ILL or use the close-to-school public library that’s way better and nicer. Fortunately I do like lots of YA lit!

  • Cathi says:

It’s been several years since I’ve been to the library however, my DIL take my grand kids every week. Hooray for her!!

  • Tara says:

I love going to the library.. however, I have a thing for books on bookshelves that I can see everyday lol I love collecting my own!!

  • I wish we have a public library but we don’t. I just buy books occasionally. I love reading and it’s always a nice treat to have a new book.

  • Becky says:

I go to the library, but if I am shopping and I see a cute kids book that I just have to have, I buy it. My latest buys were two great books written by Lance Waite, “A Day At the Beach With My Dad,” and “A Day With My Dad.”

  • Both for sure! We love the library and my hubby is always buying from Amazon.
