1 in 94 boys

That is a statistic that scares the HELL out of me. As a mother of two little boys it is one we could be a part of.

Where did this come from?

It comes from something that I just heard on Oprah from yesterday, which is causing me to make mental notes of things in our house.

Could NHL have this?

Did something we allowed him to receive possibly causes this?

He wasn’t always the way he is and things seem to be worse recently. I keep trying not to read into things, but it’s hard not to.

    1 in 94 boys WHAT??

Sandra: Are diagnosed with autism. I also linked information from the show on my original entry to help clarify things.

  • Sandra says:

Oh gosh I dont know that he is showing signs of that- do you really think that?? I will read the link later. JBH is going to play Elmo games now!

  • Sandra says:

OK I read it all and really, you have nothing to worry about this being something with N. He is too social and loving for that. He is just FOUR now and four is the new 2 LOL! I know its hard not to worry but he is doing just great. You have brought him thru a lot and you will continue to see how wonderful he is doing! Relax momma- everything is great!

Sandra: I’m really not sure what I think any more. We are investigating things to figure out his sensory troubles. There are days when I think it could be, others when I think no way. I know he’s only 4 and has had a lot of transition and changes in his life recently.

I do however think that autism may be the new ADD/ADHD of this generation. I’m not doubting kids have it, but I just feel that often times the spectrum diagnosis can fit a lot of children that are just different than the so called norm.

My belief is that NHL may have some tendencies that would point me in that direction, but not enough that I see to diagnose. JL and I think that NHL is so like his daddy when he was little. There’s no telling what type of therapy he would have had at this age.

Sandra: There are many behaviors with NHL that worry me. He flaps his arms when upset, and boy does he fly off the deep end when something doesn’t go as expected. We’re talking emotional melt down. In addition to this he prefers independent play when there are kids around. Several times recently JL and I witnessed this.

My question is whether this is social behavior issues, or simply a child afraid of being rejected. Thanks to not walking for so long and being behind he was often left out while other children played. I think he was then too afraid to join back in. That is my theory, but I want to look into everything. He has a teacher that goes into his school to work with him on this. Hopefully she can bring back the success that the teacher that worked with him this summer saw.
