If you have been inside any retailer like Target, Walmart, CVS, Staples, Rite Aid, Walgreens or the like, you have probably seen the sale. Yes, even though it is still July, the Back to School craze has already started. We are over a month away from the start of school here (after Labor Day). Still, NHL’s 1st grade school supply list has been on my brain for a while. Not that I mind since I really love getting bargains this time of year. Here is what we have to purchase:
The following should be labeled with your child’s name:
- Pencils – at least 5
- 2 large erasers
- 2 large glue sticks – NO liquid sticks or bottles of glue
- Standard size pencil box – NO pencil bags please
- Box of 16 crayons – NO larger
- 2 solid color folders
- A book bag
The following should not be labeled with your child’s name – they will be community supplies:
- Box of tissues
- A set of 4 Dry-erase markers (the brand "Sharpie" works best) *black
- Package of baby wipes
- Package of plastic spoons
- Package of small paper plates
Not really a horrible list. I believe there were supplies for Pre-K and K. We have most of the items, but need to get a few more. So far the most challenging item has been the 16 pack of crayons. Of course, you should know that I am a Crayola snob. As a teacher and parent I will do nothing else. Sure Rose Art are cheaper, but they are not the same quality and man they do not clean as nicely if they get on items. We finally found a 16 pack of crayons in stock for $1.16 – compared to 20 cents for a 24 pack of Crayola crayons. Sick I tell you!
We are stil debating a backpack. I am leaning toward an L.L. Bean bag since the quality is amazing, they last and have a wonderful warranty. At the same time a lot of people love their Lands End bags. Whatever we buy will be something that will be used for several years. I had a Tough Traveler bag that I received in 5th grade (’87) and used it on my honemoon (’01).
NHL really likes the Nautical Red Grid Camo back that I showed him in the L.L. Bean catalogue the other day. Check it out:
I can definitely see this lasting, but which size do we get?
This is now the third year that I have been on the school supply receiving list end. I think it was much less stressful making the list for my students to get when I was teaching. Of course, I am sure they probably shook their fingers at me too!
So what is on your child’s school supply list? Is there something in particular that you find strange, hard to find or that you really like purchasing? Please share your thoughts. It is always interesting to compare with each other.
I have to get this one 1 large Dennison’s glue stick haven’t been able to find it yet. . .
Just a heads up I know Kmart has glue sticks on sale for 5/$1 and Elmer’s brand too. I too am a brand snob in crayons and glue.

We don’t have lists here! The school supplies the supplies!
I do get a backpack and lunchbox though!
Jenni Jiggety’s last blog post..Aloha Friday!
Here’s what we need. Items that are starred are shared within the classroom.
*36 yellow#2 pencils, SHARPENED
1 eraser and pencil top erasers
1 covered pencil sharpener, labeled
1 – 4 oz. bottle Elmer’s Glue blue label, non-washable, labeled
*8 glue sticks
1 pair Fiskar scissors, labeled
1 box 24 crayons
1 box Crayola washable markers,
labeled
*2 large boxes of tissues
1 composition notebook (black and white), labeled
3 plastic folders (1 each red, blue
and yellow)
1 plastic school supply box, labeled
I’m with you on Crayola but this is a bit crazy with the brand name requirements! Interesting that they specify Crayola washable markers but the crayons don’t have to be Crayola.
If we were staying in NJ, we would only need:
8 glue sticks
Green pocket folder for Science
8 purse-sized tissue packets
#2 pencils
Erasers
It’s amazing what a difference there is.
Oh and for backpack, he’ll reuse his Darth Vader backpack from last year. He wants a new one but that one is in good shape still so we’ll use it until it falls apart. We do need to get a new lunch bag though. We will buy school supplies when we get to Colorado, I’m actually planning on school shopping to be one of the activities to fill the time while we wait to get into the house.

Abby:
I have never heard of that brand of Glue Sticks before. Thanks for the heads up. I bought some Target brand big glue sticks to send in. I also have about 30 of the little Elmers ones left from last year. I think they were 10-20 cents at Walmart and I stocked up.
Jenni:
Wow, as a parent and teacher I think I like that deal. Teacher wise I know it would be the things that worked best in the classroom. As a parent no headaches to hit sales and look for things.
Nancy:
Wow, those lists are a lot different. The one you will be going to seems a lot more like the supply lists I have seen before. I have to say as a teacher, I wish I had suggested Fiskar brand scissors. They truly work the best. They do not stick, catch paper, or break as easily with kid usage. They also glide nicely on paper to make cutting easier. I once bought Staples brand for supply boxes to use in my classroom and we all hated them. In those same boxes I bought the cheaper Rose Art markers. After just a few uses they dried out and did not even make half the year. I learned my lesson and stuck to Crayola for markers and crayons after that. The few extra cents is well worth it when they outlast the competition.
I actually expected a list more like yours for NHL, but it did not happen. I think it may have to do with the fact that some families may not be able to afford more. I will probably send in extra pencils (which I will sharpen). As a parent it seems like a pain in the rear, but OMG try sitting there while a classroom full of kids try to start new pencils – it is painful!
The backpack is a much needed item this year. We have used a Cars one for two years now and it just needs to be retired. I figure an L.L. Bean or Lands End will last and carry him for several years . . . so long as it isn’t lost or stolen.
Like Jenni, the school supplies the supplies here too. (Well, I guess I’ll say our taxes supply the supplies!) :) AJ will reuse his LLBean backpack (we bought the smaller one and it’s plenty big for the next few years.)
I think by high school students may have to buy the type of notebook they need, but if a teacher chose to order the supplies to provide them for their students, they can. It’s probably more their desire to have their own individualized stuff.
I was flabberghasted when I saw the supply lists that were required in South Carolina. Workbooks! The high school students had to buy their own workbooks.

our PTA does this great fundraiser. I write a check for about $40 at the end of last year and with it they purchase all the necessary supplies. (it’s through some company) I don’t have to shop, I don’t have to argue, and the stuff shows up on his desk on the first day of school. It’s awesome. Plus, the check is written out to the PTA so I feel like I’m doing a good deed.
I bought a LandsEnd backpack, initials and all, last year for my kiddo and it lasted all year, it is still going strong, and he loves it. (2 years ago I got one from Lillian Vernon and it didnt really last…don’t recommend that one)
I think I just promised him a Bakugan water bottle since I don’t have to buy anything else this year!!!! (Lunchbox from Costco last year is also going strong…)

Kim:
Yes, no doubt your tax money is paying for each and every supply. Interesting that more people are saying this. I do not think many, if any, of the schools around here do this. I know that when I was teaching, the parents could pay a company to send you the supplies, but the cost was crazy.
Some of the new Science workbooks that go with series are really good and worth the money. I know that the ones we looked at when I was in the classroom cost less than $5 each.
We also have one of the small L.L. Bean backpacks. NHL got it for a B-day present years ago and well it became a diaper bag and he never got it back. We are looking at the bigger ones now to have more storage and years to grow.
Phyllis:
I am guessing that the company they order from is the same one that school I used to work for had as an option for the students. Most people did not use this since they were on the pricey side. I think I would miss shopping for school supplies. Really, I actually look forward to this time of year and getting fun bargains.
Good to hear some positive remarks about the Lands End backpack. I want something that will last at least 2-3 years. My only real options are Lands End and L.L. Bean. We still have a little time. I am leaning toward L.L. Bean only because we have the store here where I can check them out.
We’ve gotten Land’s End backpacks for all 3 boys. Connor is still using the one he got for Kdg and he’ll be in 7th grade this year! I don’t think you can go wrong with either brand, really. I’ve heard good things about both. We buy LE mainly because SIL works there and gets a 40% discount. ;)

Stacie:
Thanks Stacie :) I actually got that e-mail today. I think the thing that is stopping me from Lands End is not seeing the bags in person. We have an L.L. Bean store where I can check them out and see what size works best for NHL. I am off to look at the Lands End sale again.
I ordered Gabe’s LLBean book bag and lunch box on saturday night.. I have a LL Bean credit card and i get free shipping and free monogramming.
I am moving the kids to a new school and a new school district this year. This is very scary for my since they have always gone to school in the district I did growing up.
Not sure what the supply list is going to look like this year but am sure it will be similar to NHL’s
As far as the back packs go. It has become something of a tradition in our house that Grandma take the kids shopping to pick out their bookbags every school year. After the year is over we use the bags for toys, books or overnight trips.
Good luck on the shopping and with your 1st grader….isn’t that hard to believe? Our ‘babies’ are growing up. :(
I think Nancy has me beat… I have bought NOTHING!
24 pencils
Ziplock bags
and Headphones
is just the tip, lots of folders on and on

@Michele –
Can not wait to hear how your big guy likes his new L.L. Bean gear. I think we are leaning toward those since I like the store here where I can see all of the varieties.
@qcmama –
I with you the best of luck with the new school district. I know changes like this can be tough and hope it goes well. Keep me posted when you get your supply lists. Oh and if you can figure out a way to get the kids to stop growing up so quickly please let me know.
@Susan –
Sounds like the typical list for kids. Hmm. . . me thinks you best be moving to get some things soon. Perhaps a nice field trip for you and the kids!
