As the mother of two children that have now had four febrile seizures, I have quite the collection of temperature taking materials. Just one weekend ago, we put a lot of these items to the test. My youngest son, just 22 months old, had two febrile seizures in a 30 hour span of time.
Thanks to the Family Review Network and Exergen, my family recently had the opportunity to try a Temporal Scanner. We were very excited to try this because it was noninvasive, quick to use, and could be done while a child slept. The timing of its arrival would prove to be a blessing in disguise.
The first time I saw a temporal scanner was in February 2008 when my youngest was hospitalized for four nights. At that time he had a febrile seizure, stopped breathing and needed rescue breaths to get him going again. The first night in the pediatric ward of the hospital, one of the nurses stopped by to do vitals. He was hooked up to numerous tubes and machines. I was afraid they would need to wake him for a rectal temperature. Thankfully, they had the temporal scanner and could do it without bothering him. With a quick scan across his forehead and behind his ears, we were done. We instantly knew if we were in the fever "danger zone" of sorts.
My Review:
When the Temporal Scanner arrived, I immediately took it out of the package, read the instructions and was ready to test it out. We always test new thermometers with the boys to obtain what their "normal" reading is with each. This is very important with my youngest because JSL’s normal temperature is quite low. Worse yet, he does not exhibit signs of fevers most of the time. He will be playing one minute and wham – febrile seizure takes place. Very scary as a parent.
The boys were fascinated with my new little device (hubby included). I went around and took each of their temperatures. All I had to do was take the cap off, place it on their forehead in the proper location, press the button and move it over so slightly. It was quick, easy and the temperature reading was consistent with other thermometers that we have.
Last Saturday, after my son’s initial febrile seizure I had a difficult time with the temporal scanner. My son was barely able to sit up, hardly conscious, his temperature was spiking, and he was sweaty. All things that will alter the readings on a temporal scanner. At that moment in time, we waited for the ER where they did an official reading and started to treat my son.
It is my belief that given the circumstances at the time, nothing would have been a great means to obtain a temperature. When the body is recovering from a febrile seizure and extreme spike in temperature, all bets are off. I know that in our house we will still be using the Exergen Temporal Scanner as one of our strategic defenses against fever detection.
Important Facts about the Exergen Temporal Scanner:
- Exergen Temporal Scanner is the first infrared thermometer made to measure the body temperature via a reading from the temporal artery.
- Least invasive method of temperature taking, using a simple sweep over a patient’s forehead.
- Given typical circumstances, arterial temperature is close to rectal temperature.
- Takes over 1,000 readings per second and selects the most accurate to display.
- You can obtain a reading within two seconds.
- A red LED light and beep allow you to know if the scan is done properly
- Powered by a 9-volt battery.
- Additional Facts, including an Introductory and Educational video, may be found here.
You can purchase your own Exergen Temporal Scanner from Amazon, WalMart, Babies R Us and many other retailers nationwide. The price at most retailers is between $30-35.

Hmm, it’s FSA eligible….good to know!
The science behind the technology is really cool:
First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses
As the mother of 3 under 4, you can be sure we’d be using it a lot (unfortuantely!)
i learned that it takes the most accurate of a 1000 readings per second! i have used these and we love it!
I am currently registered for one of these temporal scanners on my baby registry. I love these scanners because they are a lot more user friendly and you don’t have to worry about positioning in the ear canal as you do with the other ear thermometers. I would love to have one of these scanners. They are AWESOME!!
I learned that “the temporal artery thermometer scans the forehead area for the temporal artery and it is almost impossible to miss the artery during a scan.”
I’d give this to my cousin who is having a baby soon.
I learned these are sold at Costco! I’ll have to look for these next time I go. I want one mostly for my son who gets really bad ear infections all too often.

A red LED light and beep let you know that the scanner is finished
I would use this for my son

The most accurate place to take the temp is in the center of the heart because of the blood flow, this uses temporal arteries to be accurate.
I’d use this on all of us – me, hubby, and the kid!
I learned that temporal artery temperature is not affected by the things that cause oral and underarm temperatures to be misleading. I would love this for my 18-month-old daughter!
It measures ambient temperatures, mathematically replaces the small temperature loss from cooling at the skin, and displays an accurate arterial temperature. I would use this on my whole family.
Something interesting I learned that I didn’t know is that The temporal artery is connected to the heart via the carotid artery, directly leading from the aorta, the main trunk of the arterial system. I didn’t realize that the best way to get a temperature is the heart. I was wondering how on earth a thermometer on the forehead could work. I have four boys who will never sit still long enough to take their temp so I’d love to have this to use on them. Thanks!

The most accurate place to measure temp is the center of the heart but the temporal artery, where the exergen temporal scanner reads the temp, is directly connected to the aorta.
We would use it for the whole family, especially for my wiggly 1 year old twins who never stay still for rectal temps.
The exergen temporal scanners are more accurate than the ear thermometers. I would use this primarily for my son, but we could all use it.
Thanks!

I learned that ‘temporal artery temperature is not affected by the things that cause oral and underarm temperatures to be misleading’. Very nice! I would use this for my 2 little ones who happen to be sick right now.

I learned that is made in the USA! I would use it for my daughter. Thanks!
I like how it is truly non-invasive. Thats where most of the battle happens in our house. My older kids dont like to wait for the beep because its uncomfortable under the tongue and 2 y/o throws a fit when i put it under her arm. This would be for all my kids but mostly my 6 y/o. shes the only one that get pneumonia and ear inf in our house.
sold at Babies r us
would use on my two girla, especially the youngest who never stays still to take her temp

I was impressed by how it is much more accurate way to take a temperature. Brilliant for my children !!
I learned it is sold at Costco and I would use it on my son or daughter the most. I don’t have a working thermometer so this would come in handy.

I learned that this is more accurate than ear or oral thermometers. I’d use it on my three kids under age five, all of whom are difficult to take temperatures on for different reasons!

I learned that the battery life of the Exergen Scanner is approx. 7500 scans. That’s a lot of temperature taking and hopefully, it would take years and years to use that up.

I learned that it is used in hospitals!!! Sells me on the product even more! AND I can buy one at Costco (if I’m not lucky enough to win one!). =)
I’d use it for the whole family!
I learned that it takes over a 1000 readings per second in order to get the most accurate. That’s amazing. I would use this for my two daughters.
I learned–The blood temperature in a major artery accurately reflects true body temperature. The TemporalScanner Thermometer is designed to measure the temperature of the skin surface over the temporal artery, a major artery of the head. I will be using this on everyone in my household (and guests if needed).
I subscribe via google reader.
I learned that arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature. I’d use it for my son. Thanks for the giveaway!

I would use this on my 8 children :)

i learned that the measurement of the blood temperature in a major artery accurately reflects true body temperature. and i would use this for my sons.
I learned that “the temporal artery is . . . the only such artery positioned close enough to the skin surface to provide access needed to take an accurate measurement.” I hadn’t realized how extremely accurate these types of thermometers are. I would use this on my baby.
I learned that Exergen TemporalScanners are now used by medical professionals approximately 500,000,000 times per year, and by consumers approximately 100,000,000 times per year. Both continue to grow rapidly.
This would be used on my two toddler girls!
