As the mother of two children that have now had four febrile seizures, I have quite the collection of temperature taking materials. Just one weekend ago, we put a lot of these items to the test. My youngest son, just 22 months old, had two febrile seizures in a 30 hour span of time.
Thanks to the Family Review Network and Exergen, my family recently had the opportunity to try a Temporal Scanner. We were very excited to try this because it was noninvasive, quick to use, and could be done while a child slept. The timing of its arrival would prove to be a blessing in disguise.
The first time I saw a temporal scanner was in February 2008 when my youngest was hospitalized for four nights. At that time he had a febrile seizure, stopped breathing and needed rescue breaths to get him going again. The first night in the pediatric ward of the hospital, one of the nurses stopped by to do vitals. He was hooked up to numerous tubes and machines. I was afraid they would need to wake him for a rectal temperature. Thankfully, they had the temporal scanner and could do it without bothering him. With a quick scan across his forehead and behind his ears, we were done. We instantly knew if we were in the fever "danger zone" of sorts.
My Review:
When the Temporal Scanner arrived, I immediately took it out of the package, read the instructions and was ready to test it out. We always test new thermometers with the boys to obtain what their "normal" reading is with each. This is very important with my youngest because JSL’s normal temperature is quite low. Worse yet, he does not exhibit signs of fevers most of the time. He will be playing one minute and wham – febrile seizure takes place. Very scary as a parent.
The boys were fascinated with my new little device (hubby included). I went around and took each of their temperatures. All I had to do was take the cap off, place it on their forehead in the proper location, press the button and move it over so slightly. It was quick, easy and the temperature reading was consistent with other thermometers that we have.
Last Saturday, after my son’s initial febrile seizure I had a difficult time with the temporal scanner. My son was barely able to sit up, hardly conscious, his temperature was spiking, and he was sweaty. All things that will alter the readings on a temporal scanner. At that moment in time, we waited for the ER where they did an official reading and started to treat my son.
It is my belief that given the circumstances at the time, nothing would have been a great means to obtain a temperature. When the body is recovering from a febrile seizure and extreme spike in temperature, all bets are off. I know that in our house we will still be using the Exergen Temporal Scanner as one of our strategic defenses against fever detection.

The TemporalScanner Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart i would use this on my 7 children!

The TemporalScanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. I would use this on my nephew he always has temperatures and I never can get an accurate reading with the other ones.

One thing that I learned from the website is that you can buy these yourself in stores … I had *no* idea! I thought that they were just available for doctor’s offices and such! How awesome! Our kids HATE regular thermometers, and the Vicks sticky ones (that stick to their foreheads) aren’t that accurate and seem to hurt coming off. I would definitely love to be entered. So generous of them!

i learned why they are more accurate than those that go in the ear…mostly because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent. this would be great for my daughter!!!
i learned that with a gentle stroke of the forehead it captures the naturally emitted heat from the skin over the temporal artery, taking 1,000 readings per second, selecting the most accurate.

The most accurate place to take the temp is in the center of the heart because of the blood flow, this uses temporal arteries to be accurate.

I can buy it at walmart or babies r us. I love how non-invasive it is and I’d use it on my son
I’m a Pediatric/Neonatal nurse and I LOVE the Exergen Temporal Scanner, although I do NOT own one YET! I learned that it measures Arterial temperature.
Arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature. I love this PRODUCT!!!

I learned that the Exergen TemporalScanner is designed to take the temperature over the temporal artery, a major artery of the head.

These are available in stores — who knew? I was so impressed when they used one of these on my daughter at the hospital recently. Imagine having one of my own!
Kayden is so fussy when hes not feeling well and its nearly impossible to get him to take an oral or rectal thermometer. This would be a blessing!
I learned that
The TemporalScanner Thermometer is a totally non-invasive system with advanced infrared technology providing maximum ease of use with quick, consistently accurate measurements.
A red LED light and beep let you know that the scanner is finished…..that is very helpful, especially in stressful situations.
These thermometers are trusted by hospitals. In fact, we use them at the hospital I work in! They are amazing and anyone would be so lucky to win one! Thanks

I had no idea it took so many readings to get the final number. I’m sure my son will like that much better than the way we do it now! ;^P

I learned advanced, patented technology measures temperatures with a gentle stroke across the forehead.
A little something I never knew….”A major reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate by medical professionals is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent, thus creating inconsistent readings and frequently missing fevers.”
I learned that you should take temperature only on the side of the head that is exposed. “Any covering, hair, hat, etc. will prevent the heat from dissipating, and would cause the reading to be falsely high.” I’d use this on my 2-year-old daughter and myself!
Jenna’s last blog post..I fixed the dryer.
I learned that the way the temperature is taken is very interesting using 2 steps: scanning like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply and at the same time measuring the ambient temperature of the site where the temperature is being taken.
I would use this for my daughter who hates when I take her temperature.
I learned that the TemporalScanner Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart during course of patient treatment and accepted for use in major hospitals, making it the ideal thermometer for use with newborns, infants, children or adults.
Which is great because I want it for my 3 month old daughter.

It was interesting to know that it’s more accurate than the thermometers that you stick into the ear! Thank goodness for that! :)
“Temporal artery temperature changes faster than temperature taken rectally
Temporal artery temperature is not affected by the things that cause oral and underarm temperatures to be misleading. ”
Both very interesting! I’m a new mom who just experienced her baby’s first fever (and we landed in the hospital for 2 days). This would be great!
