How do you forget a child?

JL called me on his way home to tell me about a note that was in all of the cubby’s today at NHL’s nursery school/daycare center. Here’s what the note said:

Dear Parents,
Today one of the classes was playing at the park. When they left the park they checked that they had all of the children and made a mistake. One of the children was left. Fortunately two hospital employees saw her, brought her into the hospital and called the center. The assistant director went and got her. She was fine and not aware that she was lost. I called the Abuse Hot Line and reported the incident and called the Office of Children and Family Services, our licensing agent and reported the incident. They will be doing an investigation involving parents and staff. I will be meeting with classrooms to make sure that procedures are in place so that this does not happen again.
The teachers that were involved are wonderful, long term employees. They are devastated that this happened. Please come and talk with me if you have any questions.
                                                                                     The Daycare Director

Needless to say I was floored. I know you can make mistakes, but how can you make a mistake counting only 10-14 kids? I am a teacher and know it’s tough to keep track of kids (granted 3-4 year old must be worse), but I did it with 32+ kids on field trips to places like NYC and Boston.

So I think I am going to call Madame Daycare Director tomorrow. I think I should be able to know if it was my child’s room. Especially given recent events that happened in the room with the chin incident. (Refresher – the day before NHL split his chin open in the bathroom by slipping on water I witnessed 4 children in the bathroom playing with NO teachers and a wet floor. I had planned on called to report it, but had to meet my child in the ER for stitches before I was able to make it there).

The good news – next Friday (NHL’s 4th B-day) is his last day there. After that SAHM is here with both boys until NHL starts public PreK.

I am SO happy for you that NHL will be out of there! That is absurd! I am also feeling blessed I never had to use a daycare for my J. (JBH – notice she shares initials with all of you LOL).

When does NHL start his pre-K? Is this full day? What are the hours? Are you keeping Jake (haha) home with you full time or will he go somewhere?

Keep me posted on what the outcome of your call is! And the outcome in general!

    Me again LOL…..

I was thinking you should provide the name of the daycare, location and director name so everyone can see!! Its public information and I would not protect them!! At least once NHL is out of there I would do it. asswipes!

I sent it to Brian with a note that all the sacrifice is worth it when we see things like this!

Only 7 more days there until his last day – which is his 4th birthday. Then the real test begins with both boys home with me until NHL starts school.

Yes, we’ve had issues with this daycare over the three years (mainly with the director), but honestly there is no perfect center. I know most of the items were nothing in the grand scheme of things. I was lucky JL took NHL every day and picked him up. Plus he was able to pop in since he was only next door.

I believe NHL starts PreK the Wednesday or Thursday after Labor Day. It is a full day. I think the day begins at 8:20 and ends a little after 2:00. I will pick him up and he’ll come home. It will be nice for both of us to have more time together. Until this he’s been going at 7:30 each day and getting back home just before 6:00 – a long day! JSL will be home with me for his first year. I may look for part time work, but will stay with him and not look for anything permanent until next fall.

    Man you again, the nerve!

Since I just lost this post and need to head to sleep soon I’ll make this shorter. Basically I won’t put the name here. JSL may need to go to this facility down the line and I don’t want anything coming back to haunt me or my child.

I may be forced to report the negligence involved in NHL’s accident IF I find out this mess happened in with his teachers. I will not play nice at that point.

And yes, you were very lucky to be able to do it. That is basically what I am doing now for at least JSL’s first year (did it for NHL too). The money wasn’t worth it, plus I wanted to be there for him and a perk is more time with NHL after school.

OMG beth…i would be more than a little pissed about this. There is a lil girl in the boys pre k class who seems to have some form of developmental disability and I think we are going to have to force the school to hire an aid specifically for her. She has run away from the teachers several times yesterday and today and they had to resort to locking down the pre k center both days to keep her in….its scary and their teachers arent fabulously observant anyway.
