For quite some time, we avoided getting rid of our land line phone (VOIP, technically speaking) because we were not sure how 911 service would work on a cell phone. Verizon Wireless assured us recently that they had gotten very good and we made the switch. Unfortunately, Thursday morning I had to dial those dreadful three numbers on my cell phone.
The only difference I noted was they did not know my address. I had to supply them with that information. Then the first responders were sent and they arrived quickly, although at the time it seemed like an eternity.
My question to you this week:
Have you ever had to call 911? If you have, what was the reason?
As a parent, dialing those numbers is never easy. I hardly remember doing it and recall fumbling with the phone at the time, but I managed in the heat of the moment. I hope that you and your families never need to test out 911 or use it again.

Sadly far too many. less then 2 years ago I came home from work to find my house burning down.
Then 3 months later My huband fell off a ladder trying to deal with the aftermath of the house. Broke the femur, got 2 blood clots and 2 weeks in the hospital.
The first time we called 911 was about 8 years ago when our firstborn was a baby. She was having a febrile seizure, but I didn’t know what was wrong. I freaked OUT! There have been several times since then…
Poor little guy :(

I almost had to just a couple weeks ago.
Luckily my husband came home. I don’t know what I would have done.
I hope your little guy gets better soon.

Read in comments somewhere else that your little one had a febrile seizure & your older boy is just getting over the flu. I hope everyone is feeling better quickly.
I called 911 once as a lifeguard & had 911 called for me following a snow tubing accident. Both times seemed like some of the longest moments of my life.

Once when my husbands grandmother who was living with us got sick and once when my husband had an SVT.
Hope your son is over the flu and your little one is all better!

When I was in high school I was home sick from school and we lived in an apartment. I could hear some commotion coming from the front of our apartment and the next door neighbors were having a fight. As a nosy neighbor I was peaking out of the curtains where they couldn’t see me. All of a sudden (with their infant son in the dads arms) the husband threw his wife down the flight of cement stairs by her hair. I heard her tumble to the bottom and I was so freaked out that I grabbed the phone and accidentally dialed 311 instead of 911. (I was 16 and we were learning the 10-key add by touch in school and the numbers on a phone are different than on the calculator). Later on I had to testify in court about this situation and was emabarrased when the defense attorney assumed it took me about 3 or 4 seconds to dial 911 and I had to admit that I dialed the wrong number. LOL
Hope your little one is better!

Yes, a few times. Nothing for my kids thankfully!!
One time, the fire alarms at the middle school behind our house kept going off and none of the emergency people were notified – turned out to be a glitch.
Another time (this was recent), I saw a man break into the neighbors house. Calling the police is nerve wrecking!!
And another, I was at a stop light and a semi ran over the front of my car. Yes the kids were with me, no one got hurt though.

No I have not had to.
I have heard that happens with people with using cell phones to call 911. I have a friend who works for Verizon (not the wireless…they are separate) and informed me of the problem with 911 for people who just have cell phones a few years ago.

Yes, and poison control too. I called 911 when my baby stopped breathing. He had RSV, but he’s fine now.
Only once a long time ago when we were babysitting my niece and she got her arm caught all weirdly in our chair. The fire dept had to come cut the spindles, lol

Working as a bar manager for a million years, Yes…
I have had to call 911 on more than one occasion. I did not mess around, I would not take the risk..
The best was when I called 911 and they told me to hold on while they transfered me to my county… HUH?!
No, I never have and I hope I never will have to.

I had to call 911 when my daughter hit her head and started bleeding profusely.
Turned out it wasn’t that bad. They said the head will freak you out like that with so much blood.
Well I don’t care. If I see blood gushing. Away we be going to the hospital!

Just once. Unbelievably I was calling for my boyfriend-at-the-time as he was having a heart attack at my home…….he was only 32 years old(and I was 31). Anyways, he ended up having a stent put in etc etc. He’s fine now…….I’m assuming so anyways. Crazy thing is, he was a runner and was alway health conscious so it just proved to me that anything can happen to anyone at anytime. I remember it being quite scary.
Hope all is well at your home!

I witnessed an accident and called 911 for that. I know this was scary for you. Hope all is well and quiet on your homefront.
Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment. I live in the Memphis area and several stories are carrying them here and they are so cute-brightly colored and shiny! And it just so happens we are having unusually heavy rainfall!

I have had to call 911 several times. My mother had several strokes as a teenager, we saw a guy beating his girlfriend and had to call, seen a teenager getting beat by his father in the middle of the street, and once when someone was trying to break into my house. Never for one of my children though and I hope I will never have to. I can imagine how scared you were that is horrible. I up everything is better for you now.
I had to call 911 late last school year when I witnessed an accident. It was the most horrific thing I had ever seen in my life. I 2 year old baby girl was pronounced dead on the scene. I still have nightmares and flashbacks of the accident, the mothers screams and that poor little baby.
When Nick was 2 I called poison control instead of 911 they told me to rush him to the er don’t wait for an ambulance. Im really glad I called them first cause if I would have dialed 911 he would not have made it to the hospital. Thats when he got ahold of Clonidine a high blood pressure medication that my stepsons mom had put him on for hyperactivity. :(
